Description:
Manic Miner! To say that this gem was one of the most popular
platformers that spawned countless Miner Clones would be a
fair surmise. This game was popular across most platform during
it inception in 1983.
I believe that it is noteworthy that this game appeared only
a year after the speccy's grand birth and that for many years
thereafter, few could still write a comparable platform game
to Manic Miner as this remained top of its genre for a considerable
time.
The game is simple enough in its objective; completed each
of the twenty caverns/screens by collecting the items on each
level.
Object:
Our character is Miner Willy. You must guide willy through
each level by collecting ALL the items before returning to
the exit of each screen. In doing so, you must avoid the multitude
of different nasties blocking your way to the items in question.
Sound simple and some of the caverns are not overly complicated
to traverse. However, caution is advised on several levels
where timing is critical - you also must contend with a limited
air supply for each level.
Criticism:
The animation and sprites are superbly drawn and the action/gameplay
is spot on. The colour is well used and the many objects and
foes you encounter are proportionately included for each level.
The sound is minimal but this takes little from the fame,
and you can disable the background tune if required.
This is one of the Speccy classics that deserves without
question, a 5 star rating!
